A Location that Simply Cannot be Beat

For the past 125 plus years, the shores of Eagle Harbor in Ephraim have been graced by the Edgewater Resortโ€™s classic architectural lines and distinctive verandas, making it one of Door Countyโ€™s first and finest most recognized resorts. The original lodge was built in the 1890s as The Edgewater Lodge. The building that is now the Old Post Office Restaurant was built in 1874 for Hansenโ€™s General Store and housed Ephraimโ€™s post office in the early 1900s. The two-block area surrounding the Edgewater Resort is particularly rich in Ephraim History.

The Edgewater had a large dock that at one time dropped off guests who stayed at the Edgewater Lodge. There was the main guest lodge and a dining/gathering hall where meals and entertainment were delivered with exceptional hospitality. Some guests would take railroad service from St. Louis and make their way to Ephraim. Most early guests came for a long summer stay

Anderson Dock, which now is home of the Hardy Gallery, received guests over 150 years ago from ships loaded with summer visitors to Door County. There remain many buildings from that time, including the Preserve at Andersen Pond, all only minutes from the Edgewater Resort and is a wonderful hiking trail that is dog friendly.

There is also the old Ephraim Firehouse built in 1935 built from local limestone and constructed by the local CCC workers and is now the Firehouse Museum for an interesting look back into time. Of course, there is also Wilsonโ€™s which has been selling its own ice cream and root beer since 1906 and is still the busiest place right after sunset, where customers have been coming back generation after generation as the place to go.

The village was founded in 1853 by the Reverend Andreas Iverson as a Moravian religious community. The steeples of the Ephraim Moravian Church and the Free Evangelical Lutheran Church-Bethania Scandinavian Evangelical Lutheran Congregation are the landmarks of the village as seen from Eagle Harbor. Ephraim was the last dry midwestern village in the Midwest until 2016.

Eight different Indigenous groups made their homes in what is now called Door County. Before Swedes, Norwegians, Moravians and Belgians, there were Potawatomi, Ho-Chunk, Menominee, Ojibwe, and Sauk.

Door County is famous for its very high caliber artist and musician communities which have been a part of Door County and Ephraim since the beginning as well as many environmentally forward thinkers. The Clearing in Ellison Bay was founded in 1935 by Jens Jensen who by many is considered to be the most important American landscape architect and he declared The Clearing his โ€œgreat work.โ€

All year round there is a lot of art, history, nature, and music to explore in Door County.
